Under Canopies: get ordinary Log with an axe
Equip your axe and target a dead tree. Use its displayed axe action: the sampled v0.6.24 prompt reads GET LOG WITH AXE.
Check your carried ordinary Log count before returning to the recipe. A Workbench needs 8 Log; the Wood Cutter station separately needs 16 Log. Sticks and Softwood Logs do not satisfy those plain Log requirements.

Before you start
- Already have an axe. This page starts with using the tool and does not promise its blueprint or crafting recipe.
- Choose a dead tree that shows the Log-with-axe interaction rather than collecting nearby Sticks.
Use the axe at the Log target
The cooking-fire tutorial in the source explicitly directs the player to equip an axe and chop a dead tree for Log. Later, the camera faces a dead trunk and the interaction reads GET LOG WITH AXE.
Equip the axe, aim at the matching tree and use the displayed axe action. Follow the resulting gather interaction and check the inventory for ordinary Log. No fixed number of swings, yield per tree or respawn time is established by these sampled frames.
Match Log to the actual recipe
Read the recipe’s exact material name and available count. The Workbench and Wood Cutter construction cards use ordinary Log. Inside the Wood Cutter, plain Plank is also a separate entry from Soft Wood Plank and Hard Wood Plank.
For a first Workbench, keep 8 Log and make its 4 Rope prerequisite. The Wood Cutter has a separate 16 Log requirement; crafting one station does not pay for the other.
- Craft the Workbench item — Use 8 Log and 4 Rope, then place the station.
- Turn Log into Plank — Unlock and place the Wood Cutter, then use the plain Plank recipe.
- Make Rope from Fiber Plant — The other early station material has its own Inventory recipe.
If it does not work
- You collected Sticks but the Log requirement is still red
- Use the axe at a dead tree with the Log prompt; Sticks are a separate item.
- The recipe wants Log while you carry Softwood Logs
- Match the exact required material. Do not treat similarly named woods as interchangeable.
- The targeted tree has no matching prompt
- Check the equipped tool and target. This guide does not claim every living tree or decorative trunk supplies ordinary Log.
How to know you are done
- Your inventory has ordinary Log and the selected plain-Log recipe counts it toward its requirement. Check the number you actually gathered instead of assuming a fixed tree yield.
